Wheelchair Ministry Adds a Christmas Gift Drive for Orphaned Children—Zihuantanejo, Mexico (2021)

YKPM Adds a Christmas Gift Drive for Orphanages to a Wheelchair Ministry for Nursing Homes in Mexico

In the summer of 2020, YKPM spent several months collecting 11 wheelchairs and several walkers to support a nursing home ministry that their friend, Pastor John Sullivan, carries on in his mission work in Zihuantanejo, Mexico.

They decided to take on the effort again this year and ended up collecting 27 wheelchairs, 24 walkers plus other medical supplies.

Beyond that need, they learned there are orphanages with which Pastor John and his fellow pastor, Christian Cruz, do a great deal of work. When Melva queried Pastor Christian as to how they might be of help to these children, he asked if the ministry could support them with school supplies that they might give the kids for Christmas.

Just school supplies for Christmas? Melva wasn’t about to hear any of that!

With the help of her mom, Bonnie, they quickly put together 110 mini-backpacks filled with things the kids might enjoy. In addition to the requested school stuff, there were fun toys, learning magnets, color books, stickers, stuffed animals, etc.

The teenagers received full-sized backpacks with gifts in which they’d be interested. Melva and Bonnie spent an intense few days putting these all together and boxing them up.

Then, Jon and Melva made a road trip with a U-Haul trailer in tow to Arizona where they met up with Pastor John to hand off the goods: backpacks for the kids and wheelchairs, medical supplies, reading glasses and puzzles for the seniors in nursing homes.

Although it was a lot of work putting this all together, it was a true joy for them to be able to support the work of these wonderful pastors in Mexico.
